Sensei Richard Kim was a man of many talents, many passions, and many thoughts. His study of the martial arts was a life-long endeavor and his knowledge of karate was unmatched. He studied several styles of karate throughout his life. Shorinji-Ryu was the culmination of a life dedicated to perpetuating the martial arts. Although Sensei founded the Shorinji system, it is a traditional system of Japanese karate. Sensei went to great length to ensure that the forms and techniques taught were true to the original teacher. That said, he was quick to remind his students that ‘the true kata died with the creator’.
Shorinji Ryu is a simple style, not to be confused with an easy style. Motions are direct. Defenses and attacks are short, quick, and efficient. While it lacks the flash of many modern systems, it has the advantage of being effective against real-world attacks.
